China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Southern Theater Command announced that it expelled a Philippine C-208 aircraft from the airspace over Huangyan Dao, a region China claims as part of its territory. The PLA reported that the aircraft entered the area without obtaining prior approval from Chinese authorities.

The incident prompted China to deploy both naval and air forces to monitor the situation. The PLA issued warnings to the Philippine aircraft and subsequently directed it to leave the contested airspace. According to the PLA, this action was necessary to uphold China’s territorial sovereignty and prevent the escalation of maritime or aerial tensions in the region.

Huangyan Dao, also known as Scarborough Shoal, is a disputed area in the South China Sea, with both China and the Philippines asserting claims over it. The PLA emphasized that the presence of the Philippine aircraft in what it considers Chinese airspace was a violation of its sovereignty. The Chinese military further warned the Philippines against engaging in what it deems provocative actions, stating that such incidents could increase the risk of unintended confrontations.

In response to the event, the PLA affirmed its commitment to maintaining a heightened state of alertness to safeguard China’s territorial claims and security interests in the South China Sea. The military’s statement underscores the ongoing tensions and geopolitical complexities surrounding territorial disputes in the region.
