China has raised alarms over Japan’s escalating military initiatives, cautioning that Tokyo’s recent defense strategies could threaten the tranquility and stability of the region. During a routine press briefing held on Tuesday, Guo Jiakun, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, addressed concerns about reports indicating Ukrainian drone companies are seeking partnerships with Japanese enterprises. He emphasized that international collaborations should aim to reinforce regional security rather than exacerbate existing tensions.
Guo critiqued Japan’s recent trajectory towards military augmentation, highlighting the development of medium- and long-range offensive capabilities, the loosening of restrictions on the export of lethal weapons, and the increased activity of its Self-Defense Forces. He also noted Japan’s efforts to bolster security alliances with nations outside its immediate geographic area. According to Guo, these measures extend beyond the boundaries of Japan’s postwar defense framework and pose challenges to its traditionally defense-centric security policy.
The spokesman expressed concerns that Japan’s actions might undermine the international order established after World War II, contradicting the country’s enduring image as a peace-committed nation. He underscored that these developments could disrupt the balance and peace the region has maintained over the decades.
In light of these developments, China has urged the global community to stay alert to what it perceives as increasing signs of militarization.
