Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has commenced a significant three-day working visit to China, arriving in Shanghai on Tuesday with the aim of bolstering bilateral relations and enhancing trade partnerships. Anwar, who also holds the position of Malaysia’s finance minister, is set to engage in high-level discussions and explore opportunities in emerging technologies during his stay.

The visit, which includes stops in both Shanghai and Hangzhou, will see Anwar meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Thursday in Hangzhou. This high-level meeting signals a continued commitment to strengthening the economic ties between the two nations, with China remaining Malaysia’s largest trading partner for 17 years. Between January and August of this year alone, bilateral trade between Malaysia and China reached an impressive US$113.82 billion.

While in Shanghai, Prime Minister Anwar is scheduled to attend the WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 event and will deliver a keynote speech at the accompanying WorldSkills Conference. His itinerary further includes participation in the Fifth Global Digital Trade Expo in Hangzhou, where Malaysia is recognized as one of the Guest Countries of Honour. These events provide a platform for Anwar to emphasize Malaysia’s interest in artificial intelligence, digital trade, and international cooperation.

In addition to formal meetings, Anwar plans to connect with Chinese business and technology leaders, aiming to attract greater foreign investment into Malaysia. His engagements in China are expected to focus on promoting Malaysia as a lucrative destination for investment, particularly in sectors related to digital and technological advancements.
