Trump and Xi Discuss AI, Trade, Taiwan in Tense US-China Talks

by admin477351

U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are poised to meet in the United States amidst ongoing tensions over trade, technology, and Taiwan. This marks their second face-to-face meeting this year as both nations grapple with unresolved issues despite previous diplomatic efforts.

A primary focus of the discussions is expected to be artificial intelligence (AI), with U.S. officials advocating for a framework to enhance communication between Washington and Beijing on AI safety and governance. China, too, has expressed interest in collaboration, although the two countries diverge significantly in their perspectives on AI risks and development. The U.S. has recently restricted China’s access to advanced semiconductors crucial for AI, a move Beijing views as an attempt to stifle its technological advancement.

Trade relations remain another critical point of contention. An interim trade agreement between the two countries, which includes tariffs and restrictions on Chinese rare-earth exports, is set to expire in November. While China seeks long-term trade stability, the U.S. continues to leverage trade restrictions as a bargaining tool.

Taiwan also presents a major sticking point in the bilateral relationship. The U.S. maintains strong defense ties with Taiwan, which China considers part of its territory, opposing U.S. arms sales to the island. Future arms deals could further complicate discussions during the leaders’ meeting.

Beyond bilateral issues, Trump and Xi are expected to address broader international concerns, such as conflicts involving Iran and Ukraine. China’s significant economic ties with Iran and its close relationship with Russia add layers of complexity to these discussions.

The upcoming meeting underscores the delicate balance both countries strive to maintain in managing their strategic rivalry while ensuring open communication on matters affecting global trade, technology, and security.
