Chinese President Xi Jinping led a ceremony in Beijing on Wednesday to pay homage to the nation’s heroes and martyrs on Martyrs’ Day. The event, held at Tian’anmen Square, took place a day before China’s National Day, underscoring the nation’s recognition of those who sacrificed their lives for China’s independence, development, and prosperity.

During the ceremony, Xi and other senior leaders stood in silence following the playing of the national anthem. In a symbolic gesture of remembrance, nine large flower baskets were laid at the Monument to the People’s Heroes. This annual observance, formally established in 2014, saw participation from representatives across various sectors of Chinese society.

The commemoration coincides with two significant anniversaries in Chinese history: the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and the 90th anniversary of the end of the Long March, a pivotal event from 1934 to 1936 in the party’s history.

Xi Jinping’s participation in Martyrs’ Day each year since its inception reflects the importance placed on honoring historical sacrifices as part of the national identity and pride. The observance highlights collective remembrance and unity, reinforcing the country’s commitment to its foundational values and achievements.
