China Dominates, Supplying 99.3% of Thailand’s Solar Panel Imports

Thailand’s solar panel imports have experienced a significant increase, surging by 88.7% in the first seven months of 2026 compared to the previous year, totaling US$426.7 million. According to data from Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce and Customs Department, China accounted for a staggering 99.3% of these imports, with a value of US$423.9 million, marking a 107.1% rise from the same period in 2025.

The rise in solar panel imports coincides with Thailand’s preparations for a household solar installation program. This initiative aims to subsidize solar installations with approximately THB50,000 per household, initially targeting one million households, with potential expansion plans to cover up to 1.5 million. This program is part of a broader effort to promote renewable energy, reduce electricity costs, and foster a domestic clean-energy supply chain.

While China dominates the supply of solar panels to Thailand, Singapore and Hong Kong also contribute, though each accounts for only about 0.3% of the total import value. The Thai government’s focus on solar energy is part of a strategic move to enhance energy efficiency and sustainability in the country.

In addition to boosting imports, Thailand is exploring measures to bolster domestic solar manufacturing capabilities. Efforts are underway to collaborate with the Ministry of Labour in training workers for solar panel assembly, installation, and maintenance. Discussions with the Board of Investment are also ongoing to potentially reduce duties on production inputs not available domestically, which could further invigorate local production.

Thailand’s push towards increased solar energy usage is expected to not only provide economic benefits but also significantly contribute to environmental sustainability. The government’s initiatives are poised to create a robust framework for renewable energy adoption, ensuring a cleaner and more efficient energy future for the nation.
