In a recent development that could further strain U.S.-China relations, China has cautioned the United States to proceed with caution concerning Taiwan-related matters. This warning comes in response to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s announced intention to engage in a conversation with Taiwan’s leader, Lai Ching-te. Such direct communication is a sensitive issue for Beijing, as China considers Taiwan a part of its territory and opposes any official foreign interactions with its leadership.
China’s stance is that Taiwan is a breakaway province destined for reunification with the mainland, by force if necessary. The Chinese government consistently objects to foreign nations treating Taiwan as an independent entity and frequently criticizes high-level diplomatic engagements with Taipei. Chinese officials have expressed that these actions send misleading signals to those who support Taiwan’s independence and interfere in China’s internal affairs.
The geopolitical tension surrounding Taiwan has been escalating in recent years. In 2022, China conducted extensive military drills around Taiwan following a visit by a senior U.S. official. Additionally, Beijing has reacted strongly to American arms sales and political backing for Taiwan, viewing these moves as provocations.
While China views Taiwan as part of its territory, Taiwan regards itself as a self-governing democracy known officially as the Republic of China. The Taiwanese government refutes Beijing’s claims of sovereignty and asserts that its citizens have the right to elect their leaders and engage in international relations. The United States officially adheres to the “One China” policy, recognizing Beijing diplomatically while maintaining unofficial relations with Taiwan, and continues to provide Taiwan with defensive weaponry under the Taiwan Relations Act.
In 2016, Trump had a conversation with former Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, which marked a rare direct contact and drew criticism from China. Any new dialogue between Trump and Lai could exacerbate existing tensions between the U.S. and China and possibly provoke additional military activities by China near Taiwan.
