The United States has unveiled a new set of tariffs, reaching up to 100%, on the importation of certain drones and their components, aiming to address national security issues and lessen reliance on foreign supply chains primarily controlled by China. This policy specifically targets unmanned aircraft systems, with a focus on larger drones exceeding 25 kilograms and those featuring capabilities pertinent to national security, such as thermal imaging and docking stations. These particular products will incur a 100% tariff, while smaller drones are set to face a 25% tariff.
In addition to focusing on Chinese imports, the US will apply tariffs on drones and parts from several key trade partners. Items from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan will be subjected to a 15% tariff, while imports from the United Kingdom will see a 10% tariff, provided that the hardware, software, and technology stem from the specified countries or the US itself. Most of these tariffs are slated to be implemented starting September 3.
The White House has articulated that these tariffs are part of a broader strategy to bolster the US defense and industrial sectors, encourage the domestic production of drones, and create job opportunities within the country. This move is also seen as a response to the significant hold China, particularly Shenzhen-based DJI, has on the global drone market, where it occupies a major share of the US commercial drone industry and has been subjected to previous US restrictions due to security concerns.
US officials have voiced concerns over the potential risks posed by foreign-manufactured drones, including issues related to surveillance, the collection of sensitive data, and the possibility of attacks. The US Federal Communications Commission has previously advocated for increased domestic production to mitigate these risks.
This development occurs in the context of ongoing trade and technology frictions between Washington and Beijing. China has similarly enacted measures affecting drone exports to the US and has taken actions against several American firms, highlighting the reciprocal nature of these trade tensions.
