This burgeoning industry gained global attention at the recent World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, where China-made robots showcased remarkable abilities. Notably, some of these robots exceeded human performance benchmarks, including Usain Bolt’s renowned 9.58-second 100-meter sprint and Wayde van Niekerk’s 43.03-second 400-meter sprint record.

The swift progress in this domain has heightened competition among Chinese robotics firms and industry experts, all vying for a leading position in this emerging market. This development has sparked a crucial discussion: Has the humanoid robotics sector reached its revolutionary “iPhone moment”? The term, coined by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang in 2023, describes a pivotal technological breakthrough that propels an innovation from a nascent idea to widespread adoption, fundamentally altering industries and user experiences.

Wang Xingxing, the founder and CEO of Unitree Robotics, one of China’s prominent humanoid robot manufacturers, provided a measured perspective on the timeline for embodied intelligence to hit such a transformative breakthrough. Speaking at the 2026 World Robot Conference in Beijing on August 20, Wang suggested that an industry tipping point, akin to the impact of ChatGPT, could be reached within two to three years. However, he also noted that under a slower development trajectory, it might take five to ten years.

Unitree Robotics, a key player in this technological race, marked a significant milestone with its recent debut on the Shanghai Stock Exchange’s STAR Market, where its shares saw an impressive 460 percent increase by the end of the trading day. This financial success underscores the growing interest and investment in the field of humanoid robotics, highlighting the potential for substantial industry growth.
