China and Switzerland have successfully wrapped up negotiations to enhance their free trade agreement, signaling a move towards stronger economic collaboration between the two nations in a time of increasing global trade tensions. The announcement was made in Bern by Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and Swiss President Guy Parmelin, who also signed a memorandum of understanding to mark the occasion. The discussions, which began in September 2024, covered five rounds before reaching a conclusion.
The newly upgraded agreement aims to expand market access in both directions, focusing on areas such as trade in goods and services, investment, and trade regulations. Both countries have expressed that this agreement will establish a more stable and predictable environment for businesses, ultimately enhancing long-term economic cooperation.
Initially, China and Switzerland entered into a free trade agreement in 2013, with the agreement taking effect in 2014. The latest upgrade to this agreement reflects a continued commitment to fostering deeper economic ties amid uncertain global trade landscapes.
Before the upgraded agreement can be formally signed and implemented, both nations will need to complete their respective domestic procedures.
